Niagara-on-the-Lake, nestled at the mouth of the Niagara River where it meets Lake Ontario, boasts one of Canada's richest historical tapestries. Originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples including the Neutral and Mississauga nations, the area was settled by British Loyalists in 1781 and named Butlersburg, later West Niagara. In 1792, it became Newark, the first capital of Upper Canada.
During the War of 1812, the town was invaded by American forces and burnt, but it was rebuilt and renamed Niagara-on-the-Lake to distinguish it from nearby Niagara Falls. The town is home to Ontario’s oldest Anglican church, St. Mark’s, and North America’s oldest surviving golf course.
In 1970, the town merged with surrounding villages to form the modern municipality. Today, it’s celebrated for its preserved colonial architecture, Fort George, and the Shaw Festival, drawing visitors from around the world. From battlefield to cultural haven, Niagara-on-the-Lake is a living museum of Canadian heritage.
Located in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Wellington House, Bed and Breakfast, features a balcony with views of the Shaw Festival Theatre, just 1 minute away on foot. The B&B offers two king sized rooms and one double king-sized room, each equipped with a gas fireplace and a large TV and free hi-Speed Wi-Fi.
Guests will find a small fridge and tea and coffee-making facilities in every room. A breakfast is served daily in the elegant dining room.
With several restaurants and shops within a 5-minute walk in the town centre, guests can easily explore local offerings. Notable attractions, such as the Niagara Historical Museum and Butler's Barracks National Historic Site, are a short stroll away, making Wellington House, Bed and Breakfast, an excellent choice for exploring the area.
